What is the difference between Stud Book Entry and Registration?
The Stud Book defines the breeding population and gives quality designations. Only Mares and Stallions are entered and given a designation. Registration certificates are not issued for Stud Book Entry of mares or stallions that are already registered with another Association. Instead, entered Mares and Stallions will receive a 'Certificate of Stud Book Entry' with an identifying approval/entry number (APPR).
Registration certificates are issued for all foals born of entered parents. The Registration certificate is a birth certificate. It is issued only once and identifies the pedigree, breeder, owner, description, etc. of each individual horse.
STUD BOOKS
Mare & Stallion:
All mares and stallions to be used for breeding in the current year must be 'entered' in the CWHBA Mare or Stallion Book. All information concerning the horse is noted here. This allows for registration of foals at a far more reasonable rate and assures the quality standards of Warmbloods in Canada.
The Stud Book Regulations define the breeding population for the breed and regulate the registration of the ensuing offspring.
The Studbook is subdivided into seven sections:
G - General Stud Book providing registration certificates for approved pedigrees
MM - Main Mare Book
M - Mare Book
P1 - Pre-Mare Book I
P2 - Pre-Mare Book II
A - Auxiliary Book
S - Stallion Book
All animals registered by an entered and approved stallion out of an entered mare will receive a 'G' suffix. Entry in the divisions of the Stud Book for Mares and Stallions above, shall take place when the respective conditions concerning pedigree & inspection have be met.
Stallion Book:
All stallions to be bred must be entered in the Stallion division of the Stud Book. Consistent with international selection procedures, full approval includes: pedigree requirements, conformation inspection, 100 day or other accredited performance testing and offspring evaluation. Eligible stallions include:
• All tested stallions of recognized Warmblood breeding.
• CWHBA registered, licensed and tested stallions.
• A limited number of stallions having desirable pedigree or performance, i.e. racing thoroughbreds.
• Warmblood stallions which have significant results in sport competition.
Main Mare Book: (MM)
Entered shall be 3 year old and older mares which, on inspection:-
a) are out of dams which are entered in the Main Mare Book or Mare Book of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry.
b) the sire must be entered in the CWHBA Stud Book or with another recognized Warmblood registry, and the 6 parts of the criteria and at least 6 in the final judgment, or have been
c) previously inspected & accepted in the Main Mare Book (or equivalent) of the following Warmblood registries recognized by Agriculture Canada:
NOTE: Non warmblood mares which have been entered into the Main Mare or Mare Book of recognized Warmblood registries may not qualify for entry at this level.
Mare Book: (M)
Entered shall be 3 year old and older mares which, on inspection:-
a) are out of dams which are entered in the Main Mare Book, the Mare Book or the Pre-Mare Book I (P1) of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry. The sire, and sires of the dam and the granddame must either be entered in the Studbook of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry, or
b) are registered Trakehner mares, or,
c) are accepted into the Mare Book (or equivalent) of one of the Warmblood registries recognized by Agriculture Canada.
Pre-Mare Book I: (P1)
Entered shall be 3 year olds and older mares which, on inspection:-
a) are out of dams which are entered in the Pre-Mare Book II of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry. The sire must either be entered in the Stud Book of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry.
Pre-Mare Book II: (P2)
Entered shall be 3 year old and older mares which, on inspection:-
a) are out of dams which are entered in the Pre-Mare Book II or the Auxiliary Book of the CWHBA or of another recognized registry. The sire must be either entered in the Stud Book of the CWHBA or of another recognized Warmblood registry, or
b) are registered Thoroughbred, Arabian or Anglo-Arabian mares
Auxiliary Book: (A)
Entered shall be 3 year old and older mares which do not qualify for entry in one of the aforementioned divisions of the Studbook.
General Stud Book: (G)
• provides registration certificates for approved pedigrees. All foals sired by a Licensed / Approved sire will be registered in the General Stud Book.
• G Book horses will be upgraded to one of the Mare Books above on inspection, the level to be determined by the level of the dam. Mares will be eligible for upgrading of one level higher than the dam on inspection.
** Foals from mares born 1992 or later and not yet inspected for entry into an appropriate level of the mare books will be registered in the Auxiliary Book, regardless of the mare book for which she may be eligible upon inspection. When said mare is inspected, her foals will be reclassified according to her final Stud Book level as determined by the conditions of 'Mare Books' above.
** Effective 2006, mares to be Inspected and/or Entered for Breeding must have DNA on file with the Association. If DNA typing has been done, the owner must supply a copy of those results or mane hair will be pulled at the Inspection site.
