How to Register Your Canadian Warmblood

  1. Membership -You must be a full member. – Join here
  2. Eligibility – The pedigree of your foal must trace to, at minimum, one Warmblood parent.
  3. Mare Entry – The dam of your foal must be entered in the CWHBA studbook.   Which means:
    1. She has been inspected and/or entered for breeding.
    2. Her registration or entry number will have a suffix A, P2, P1, M or MM.
    3. Her DNA will be on file.
    4. You are on record as the owner or lessee at time of foaling.
  4. Stallion Entry – The sire of your foal must be an approved and entered stallion or a WBFSH member foreign registered and approved stallion in which case you must provide:
    1. pedigree,
    2. studbook and inspection status in his registry
    3. DNA markers.
  5. Registration – Use the convenient online registration or complete both pages of the registration form for foals
    1. draw the markings in and fill in the description.
    2. include DNA hair sample with DNA Kit.
    3. Include a breeding certificate.
    4. If you purchased the foal prior to registration you sign as the owner of the foal, but the breeder is the person you purchased from. A copy of the bill of sale needs to accompany the application.
  6. Fees – Look up the fees on the fee schedule;  remember to include the GST/HST that applies to your province. Payment may be made by cheque, e-transfer or credit card.

1. UELN (Universal Equine Life Numbers) will be used wherever available.


Sourcing foreign stud book DNA.


1. If the sire or dam does not show in the Equis database, please write to pedigreeresearch@canadianwarmbloods.com in order for us to request their DNA profile. We have good reciprocity with most all WBFSH stud books, though there may be situations where a DNA profile is not on record due to age of the horse or non-inspection of a parent. In the later case, you may be required to submit a mane hair DNA sample. Please note that even though a horse appears in the Equis database, we may not have a DNA profile e.g where the parent is deceased. If in doubt, pleas write and ask whether a profile exists.

    • in the case of frozen semen, please retain a cooled used straw (do not refreeze) and write for instructions to submit to our Lab for DNA testing. 


2. Is the mare or sire a Thoroughbred?  You will need to complete the two forms attached here and return to pedigreeresearch@canadianwarmbloods.com in order to request their DNA profile. The Jockey Club does not charge for this service. Search the TB database here: Equineline

    • Transfer of Ownership - this places the mare in the Jockey Club's mare book

    • Release of DNA - this allows the Jockey Club to send the DNA profile


3. Is the mare or sire registered with AQHA? You will need to complete the attached release of DNA. Please note, the person signing must be the owner of record with AQHA. You will need to complete the form attached here and return to pedigreeresearch@canadianwarmbloods.com in order to request their DNA profile. The AQHA does not charge for this service. 4. Is the mare or sire registered elsewhere with a non-Warmblood studbook? You will need to write to pedigreeresearch@canadianwarmbloods.com with a copy of the registration papers for the process in to order to request their DNA profile.




Old papers:  this system may or may not appear on your papers or on the Equis database pedigree.


Foals born in 1994 & thereafter will be issued registration certificates when both sire and dam are entered in the Stud Book for the year of covering.


Foals from non entered stallions may receive registration certificates if they meet the pedigree requirements of the Stud Book regulations. This provision includes foals from acknowledged stallions standing in foreign countries. An additional fee will be levied for these registrations.


Registration certificates are numbered according to the system "PP-[CAN]NNNN-YY DD", where:

PP is a two letter code corresponding to the Province or region of birth. (OT = out of country)

AB - Alberta

BC - British Columbia

SK - Saskatchewan

MB - Manitoba

ON - Ontario

PQ - Quebec

NS - Nova Scotia

PE - Prince Edward Island

NB - New Brunswick

NF - Newfoundland

YK - YukonNT - North West Territories


[CAN] indicates a Canadian born horse - for registrations processed from 1998 on

NNNN is a four digit identification number.

YY is a two digit number corresponding to the year of birth.

DD is a 1 or two letter/digit code corresponding to the Studbook division; foal papers will be issued G (or A).

Example: AB-[CAN]1234-92 MM shall mean the Province of Alberta [Canada], serial number 1234, born 1992, entered in the Main Mare Book.


The CWHBA issues these registration certificates:

• Red Certificates:

Are for foals with the required generations of approved pedigree and out of Main Mare Book (MM), Mare Book (M) or Pre-Mare Book I (P1) mares, which are by Licensed or Approved stallions and entered in the Studbook of the Association. Eligible for Branding.

• Blue Certificates:

Are for foals out of Pre-Mare Book II (P2) mares, and by a Licensed/Approved stallion which has been entered in the StudBook. Eligible for Branding.

•White Certificates:

Are foals out of Auxiliary Book mares by an entered, Licensed or Approved stallion and will have a G suffix to their number; NOT eligible for branding.

- where the sire is from non-approved Warmblood pedigree, the foals will have an 'A' suffix. NOT eligible for branding.


Horses born prior to 1994, not registered with another Warmblood association, may have a CWHBA registration certificate issued if they meet the pedigree requirements of the Stud Book regulations.

Registration Fee: $90.00
